With the main event just a few weeks away, DEMO Brasil has revealed the 56 projects invited to take the conference stage. Out of 545 applicants, 39 startups and 17 students have been selected to pitch their models and business ideas to the DEMO audience.
The number of applications to present at DEMO Brasil met and surpassed event organizers’ expectations. Projects were evaluated on market potential, business model, team, concept, competitors, international scale and, most importantly, innovation.
“We are extremely satisfied with the level of enrollments and with what we are taking to São Paulo in June,” remarked Geraldo Santos, Executive Producer and Partner of DEMO Brasil. “We are sure that people at DEMO Brasil will see passionate entrepreneurs, quality ideas and disruptive business models.”
DEMO Brasil by the Numbers
Of the over 500 applications received by DEMO Brasil, 97% came from within Brazil. In fact, 51% were from the state of São Paulo. Startups from other countries in Latin America – namely, Chile, Argentina and Peru – showed interest as well.
With respect to business models and concepts, about half of inscriptions were related to mobile apps. B2B solutions, consumer products and e–commerce were also prevalent.
Among the finalists, 55% are from the state of São Paulo, and 38% are from other Brazilian states – including 12% from Rio de Janeiro. The remaining 7% are based in other countries – Chile, Argentina and Spain.
“We reached our goal, which was to create opportunities for entrepreneurs from all over Brazil and Latin America. For that, partnerships with startup accelerators, entities and associations and investors, poles and technologic parks and teaching institutions from all over the country were essential to guarantee national coverage,” said Santos. “The results show us that the market is in expansion and that innovative ideas are everywhere. We are living in a unique moment in the market. This is the beginning of the ripening and professionalizing process.”
The startups and students will compete in one of two categories – Demonstrators for startups and Alpha Pitch for students. The winner of each group will receive a spot in a 28–day summer program in Silicon Valley to develop and improve their business models.
