Meet the 100 Startups of Start-Up Chile: Gen VII

After receiving more than 1,570 applications, Start-Up Chile has selected the startups that will join its seventh class. A new group of 100 startups from 28 countries will soon be walking the Corfo organization’s halls.

This marks Start-Up Chile’s first 2013 selection. The startups, which will arrive in July, come from a wide array of industries and markets. Chile will become a platform for them to launch their projects to the world, the country’s own ecosystem gaining force along the way.

The countries with most representation in this new batch are the United States (19%), Chile (18%), India (10%) and Argentina (7%). Start-Up Chile is characterized by giving opportunities to entrepreneurs from every corner of the world, and this time around won’t be the exception – teams from Ukraine, Tanzania, Estonia and Romania are in the mix.

With respect to industries, 20% of the startups selected fall into the IT & Enterprise Software category, followed by e-commerce at 15%, Mobile & Wireless at 10%, and Education at 10%. Other sectors include Social Media, Healthcare & Biotechnology, Energy & Clean Tech, Social Enterprise and Tourism, among others.

Horacio Melo, Executive Director of Start-Up Chile, commented on the prospects of this next generation of startups:

Today we announced Start-Up Chile’s 7^th generation. More than 1,000 entrepreneurs have lived the Start-Up Chile experience, and we can say with confidence that there is a young but rapidly maturing ecosystem waiting for these talented entrepreneurs. Regarding this recently accepted generation of startups, all I can say is that there are really great projects in the group, and we are confident they will generate huge impact here in Chile, both regarding business aspects and social impact ones.

The entrepreneurs selected by start-Up Chile will receive a year-long work visa to develop their projects for at least six months in the country as well as US$40,000 in equity-free funding. Moreover, participants will participate in diverse social-impact activities in order to share their knowledge with the community.
