What would €100,000 mean for your startup? It’s time to starting thinking about it, because the 2013 edition of BBVA Open Talent is underway, and that’s what’s in play.
BBVA Open Talent is an annual competition for innovative technology-based startups and a platform for raising the profile of new projects and business models in banking, technology, business and the internet. This year will mark the fifth edition of the contest.
Since its foundation, BBVA Open Talent has reviewed more than 1,600 applications. Last year, more than 500 companies registered, 35% of which came from Latin America. This in mind, this year’s BBVA Open Talent will have a special focus entrepreneurs and startups from Latin America and the United States, though companies from all over the world are welcome to apply.
Startups may register to compete in one of two categories:
New Banking: Projects that represent a new understanding of banking that is more client-oriented with the objective of improving user experience.
Innovation and Technology: Projects related to society (health, education, work, travel, tourism, smart cities, etc.), technology platforms (mobile apps, cloud computing, hardware and software, etc.), e-business, e-commerce, gaming, social networks and web 2.0.
Inscriptions for BBVA Open Talent 2013 will remain open until May 8th. Startups from around the globe are invited to apply, the only condition being that they have been in existence for no more than two years. Candidates are encouraged to submit video pitches with their applications.
During the next phase of the competition, from the 13th to the 27th of May, the public will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite projects online. Online voting results will have a 10% weight when selecting contest finalists. The online favorite will also be invited to attend the 2013 edition of Emtech Spain.

The winning startups – one in each category – will be awarded up to €100,000.
