A featured event of Global Entrepreneurship Week, the Startup Open is a contest for the best and brightest in startups from around the world. From a group of 400 applicants, 50 finalists have been selected based on concept, growth projections and market knowledge. A panel of judges will evaluate the finalists through the month of October and into November. The winners will be announced on November 12th, the day that Global Entrepreneurship Week commences. Teams will be awarded a wide array of prizes, and the first-place startup will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the Global Entrepreneurship Congress in Rio de Janeiro next year.
Brazil, Chile and Mexico Make the List
Seventeen countries are represented in the 2012 GEW 50, including five companies hailing from three different Latin American locales:
Bonuu! – Brazil. A rewards and benefits system that allows consumers to earn points and redeem prizes for purchases from their favorite stores and local businesses.
CityHeroes – Chile. A platform that connects users with friends, colleagues and communities to report and solve everyday problems.
Gamer Deal – Chile. A startup that aims to add excitement to professional gaming tournaments and create a united online gaming community.
Hipos.com – Mexico. A website designed to provide consumers with free tools, information and advice with respect to mortgages.
OmniSense LLC – Chile. A developer of intelligent wireless sensor systems for energy, health, security and other industries.
Chile is notably strong on the list, lending three startups to the GEW 50. Interestingly, both CityHeroes and OmniSense have participated in Start-Up Chile (OmniSense was founded and is based in the United States).
All of the enterprises composing the 2012 GEW 50 will be given this week to tweak their ideas for judging. In just a few short weeks, the winning startup will be announced.
