The WSA-mobile Global Champion contest has come to a close. The applications have been evaluated, and the votes have been tallied. And now, the winners across eight categories have been announced – one of which is straight out of Latin America.

Brazilian mobile application Hand Talk won the m-Inclusion & Empowerment Category and was named a WSA-mobile Abu Dhabi Champion 2013.

Founded by Ronaldo TenórioCarlos Wanderlan and Thadeu Luz, Hand Talk helps the hearing impaired. It receives data and translates in into Brazil’s official sign language, Libras, with a 3D avatar that appears on the mobile screen. The app works with both voice and text, and its API can be used across various operating systems and platforms. It makes content available to people who do not know a spoken language and is an exceptional social inclusion tool for Brazilians with hearing disabilities.
