Geeks On A Plane 2012 Tour: Get ready South America

Date: May 2012. Place: South  America..

If you think Geeks On A Plane is a rock band throwing a concert in our region in May 2012, you’re close enough except they don’t play guitars or sing covers in public (maybe at Guitar hero). They might not be rockstars -well, at least not the traditional ones you expect -, but for sure, they’re going to rock South America in their next visit.

Who are they? Geeks On A Plane is an invite-only tour and excellent opportunity for investors, startups and executives -Founders, Directors, CEO’s-, to get to know other scenarios, to see and understand entrepreneurship from other points of view. The whole idea is to have an entire group of cool geeks, traveling by planes, buses or cars, exchanging ideas, seeing opportunities to expand their companies -or to invest in new ones- get to know other people like them, and have the best experience about entrepreneurship, friendship and culture at the same time.

This program was created by Dave McClure, founder of 500 Startups, a Silicon Valley startup fund and incubator program. And according to his bio on GOAP site:

“…(Dave) has been geeking out in Silicon Valley for over twenty years as a software developer, entrepreneur, startup advisor, angel investor, blogger, and internet marketing nerd.”

In 2012 tour, they are going to visit 4 cities: Miami (launch city), Mexico City, Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires; if the word –invite-only– disappointed you, do not worry, you can get involded with you GOAP, either by organizing an event, sponsoring the tour, or simply attending; all they ask you to do is fill out a form and wait for their answer to know if you were selected.

The goals of GOAP program as listed on the page are:

Meet startups, geeks, and investors in cities around the world.
Learn about trends in internet, mobile, and other tech platforms.
Gain insight into local markets, demographics, business models.
Meet cool people, new ventures, have fun on planes, trains, buses.

Sounds fun right? Last year the tour visited India, Asia and of course, Latin America, where the lead organizers were Dave McClure and Wenceslao Casares, and some of the travelers were Leo Prieto -Co Founder Betazeta Networks Aardvark Labs, Peng Ong -Founder and Toni Schneider CEO Automattic & WordPress, along with 33 more travelers.

Now you know about them, would you like to be part of the geek tour and rock South America?

I believe is a very interesting effort to bring closer the US VC firms with entrepreneurs in Latin America. And also for Latin America entrepreneurs to get exposure of what are the views of VCs and how could the startup model could work in the region?
